Argante and Géronte, two rich and greedy old merchants, are on a business trip and leave their two sons in the care of the servants Scapin and Silvestre. They can think of nothing better than to fall head over heels in love: Léandre, Gérontes' son, ensnares the beautiful Zerbinetta, a traveling girl of questionable origin, and Octave, Argante's son, even secretly marries the lovely but penniless Giacinta. But actually the two fathers have agreed that the son of one should marry the daughter of the other! What to do? Scapin, the cunning and quick-witted servant, is supposed to help. However, with the help of all sorts of tricks and antics, the two fathers are deprived of their money by him - and in the end, everyone experiences a surprise that even the sly Scapin did not expect in his wildest dreams!
