Frida Kahlo. Her photographs - Exhibition at the Opelvillen Rüsselsheim - 2for1 tickets
The Opelvillen present over 200 photographs from the extensive collection of pictures by Frida Kahlo (1907-1954), which served her as memories, sources of inspiration and working material. The Mexican artist became world-famous for her unique style of painting, which ranged between Naïve Art, Surrealism and New Objectivity, and not least for her autobiographical themes and her treatment of her eventful life - her illness, her suffering, her marriage to Diego Rivera. It was only fifty years after Kahlo's death that her immense private photo archive came to light, with images of the family, the couple's political struggle and her damaged body.
Both Frida Kahlo's father and grandfather were professional photographers, and she herself made use of photography in various ways. Among other things, she collected daguerreotypes and postcards from the 19th century and kept photographs to which she put her personal stamp by cutting things out of them, writing dedications on them and personalizing them. She gave them to her friends, they were memories of her deceased relatives and they became an important source of inspiration for her paintings. They also served as a means of self-expression. Frida Kahlo was aware that photography was an effective medium for conveying the image of herself that she wanted to show to others. Through her photographs, anonymous private images and portraits of her father, as well as the images she collected from renowned photographers, a haunting document of the time and an intimate insight into the life of one of the most remarkable artists of the 20th century emerges.
